History

The Northern Areas (NA) Advisory Council with 14 seats was setup in 1970 which was re-named as NA Council with 18 members in 1975. Legal Frame work Order (LFO) was extended in 1994 and eight seats (6 for men 2 for women)were added. A post of Deputy Chief Executive along with 3 to 5 Advisers was also created. In 1999 NA Council was renamed as NA Legislative Council. Position of Speaker & 3 women seats were added. It was given the powers to legislate on 49 subjects. Seat of Deputy Speaker was created in 2003. In 2004, 6 seats of technocrats were created and women seats were increased from 3 to 6. NA LC was renamed as Northern Areas Legislative Assembly in 2007 and since September 2009 it is governed under Gilgit-Baltistan (Empowerment and Self-Governance Order), 2009.
